Senior resource center to host a genealogy presentation
FREEPORT – The Senior Resource Center, 206 E. Stephenson St., will host a special genealogy presentation from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. on June 10 via Zoom.
The subject will be “Mayflower Genealogy,” presented by Cary Stone-Greenstein of the Illinois Mayflower Society.
For those who think they may be the descendants of a Mayflower passenger, Stone-Greenstein will provide a wealth of information. She will say how one can prove or disprove a possible parentage and what resources might be available to help. The program will cover the Mayflower Society’s records on the genealogy of its members and how and where the records can be viewed.
Stone-Greenstein began genealogy in 2001 when her mother became confined to a nursing home and their subsequent conversations involved her mother telling family stories. After her retirement in 2004, she became active in genealogical and lineage research, notably as a registrar / genealogist / historian for several lineage groups. Stone-Greenstein is the longest serving of several Illinois Mayflower Society co-historians.
The program is presented in partnership with the Stephenson County Genealogical Society.

Pearl City Brat Stand that will take place
PEARL CITY – The Pearl City Brat booth will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on June 12 and 26 at Old BOCO Station at the corner of Highway 73 and Pearl City Road.
Bratwurst or hot dog dishes can be purchased for $ 5.50.
Timber Lake Playhouse will provide summer opportunities for teens
MOUNT CARROLL – Timber Lake Playhouse, 8215 Black Oak Road, will provide summer opportunities for area teens.
For the fifth year in a row, the Illinois Arts Council has awarded Timber Lake Playhouse a grant to create a paid learning program for area teens interested in pursuing a career in the performing arts. TLP is now accepting applications for the apprenticeship program. The learning program is designed to immerse pre-college teens in Northwestern Illinois in all aspects of professional theater production.
Rather than volunteering, the grant offers an hourly rate of pay comparable to various summer jobs. Interested youth should send an application letter with an artistic statement and a letter of recommendation from someone familiar with their work to [email protected].
For the fifth season, TLP is producing an All-Area Teen Production. This summer, the production will be a staged concert version of “Rent.” It premieres July 26-30 and tells the story of a group of New York artists living on the Lower East Side of Manhattan in the early 1990s.
Auditions for “Rent” will take place from 10 am to 5 pm on June 12 and recalls will take place on June 13. Students in the ninth year through 2021 will be eligible to audition. Please be prepared with a 45-60 second cut from a song on the show or similar song. Pop / rock songs are acceptable. Please bring your own sheet music for the accompanying accompanist. Teenagers can also sing on their own.
TLP also hires teenagers to work in the ticket office, gift shop, corporate kitchen, and concession stand for productions throughout the year.

Chesney Launches Summer Book Club Program
FREEPORT – State Representative Andrew Chesney, R-Freeport, recently announced the official launch of its third annual summer book club program for students in Grades 1 to 5, or those entering Grade 6 year, who live in the 89th Legislative District.
The program is offered to encourage students to read during the summer and to promote the benefits of lifelong literacy.
Brochures are now distributed electronically to schools and libraries, and paper forms are also available by direct mail on request. The form can be completed online at repchesney.com.
Participation in this program may overlap with any other summer reading program offered by libraries, schools or organizations in the area. Participating students have until August 2 to read their eight books and will receive special recognition and a special gift to reward them for their summer readings.
