Japan weighs down Games with spectators – Asahi Journal

More Japanese government officials and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games organizers are looking into hosting the Games with domestic spectators as COVID-19 vaccines are launched, the Asahi newspaper reported without citing sources.

This contrasts with their stance about a month ago, when there was an atmosphere within Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s administration that the Games, starting July 23, were to take place without spectators, according to the report.

Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto said on Tuesday that organizers would announce his plans to spectators before the end of the month after consulting with the Japanese government, as well as the Tokyo administration, the newspaper said.

Foreign spectators are already banned from the Olympics and the Japanese can also be kept away from what organizers promise to be a sanitized “bubble” event to minimize the risk of contagion. Read more

The Olympics have been postponed for a year due to concerns about how organizers can keep Japanese volunteers, athletes, officials and the public safe during a fourth wave of COVID-19.
