BRUNSWICK, Ohio (WJW) – For Mikayla Dwulat, 5, of Brunswick, playtime in her backyard doubles as a crash course to learn how to grow her favorite vegetables.

“She and I just started pairing it up and we had a new love for gardening,” said Amanda Burke, Mikayla’s mother.

But instead of keeping everything to themselves, this mother-daughter duo will soon be selling everything from tomatoes to zucchini; Help raise funds for an inclusive special needs playground project at Neura Park in Brunswick.

City manager Carl DeForest said a special education teacher from schools in the city of Brunswick introduced the idea to the city last year. In May, city council approved a resolution to set aside $ 175,000 in the city’s park capital improvement funds.

Donations and a special grant would pay the project balance of $ 300,000.

“It’s a dollar for dollar game, so we could get anywhere from $ 1 to $ 175,000. And if we get 175, we put our 175 with it and we’ll have just enough to complete the project, ”DeForest said.

From an environment rich in sensations to comfortable spaces, this state-of-the-art playground will go beyond wheelchair accessibility.

“Families want to get their kids out and have the opportunity to play with their siblings or with the kids in the neighborhood, and that gives the kids the chance to play like everyone else,” said Kris Froehlich, park visitor .

Burke said their vegetables should be ready to sell by July.

“Buy the vegetables or make a donation. Whatever they would like to do, ”she said.

If all goes according to plan, the new playground could be ready by summer 2022.
