For many families, Friday evenings in the fall are spent watching a good football game in high school. Bristol Eastern fought in Plainville on Friday night, and fans filled the stands.

“It’s socialization. It’s camaraderie. This is what these kids didn’t get because of COVID, ”said Bristol parent Kelly Brown.

But the conditions to enter are a little different from before. Younger students now need an adult with them.

“It’s all about safety, you know. People cannot be hurt here, ”said Eli Brown, a student at Bristol Eastern High School.

In a letter sent Thursday, the Plainville superintendent said he saw more high school and elementary school students left unattended during high school games and noticed more incidents of misconduct or inappropriate behavior on the part of these students. students. Officials say large groups of young people congregate on unlit grounds adjacent to the games and have seen an increase in vandalism and other safety concerns in recent weeks. The superintendent says they are taking a proactive approach by now requiring students in grades eight and under to be accompanied by an adult for games that start after 5 p.m.

“I am on both sides. I understand both sides, ”said Thomas Bouchard, parent from Plainville.

“I think that’s a good idea. Keep things under control. There are a lot of things that people need to be aware of, and children should always be supervised in some way. I don’t think so. not that this is a bad idea, ”said Chris Valenti, parent of Plainville.

“Safety is a really huge concern, and it should always be the number one priority. I’m just concerned about kids who might not have a parent who can. They could work, ”said Kelly Brown.
