Another local neighborhood market is on the horizon, this time a southern-centric concept in Henrico County.

Hickory & Oak aims to open in late October at 10614 Patterson Ave., in the Canterbury Mall, just west of Gaskins Road.

The market will focus on barbecue and chicken, and will also feature shrimp and oatmeal, steaks, salads and more as prepackaged meals and take-out to order. The market will also sell groceries from local food businesses.

“It will be like Stella’s Market but with a Southern theme,” said co-owner Andy Harrison, referring to local chain Stella’s Grocery. Harrison opens the market with his business partner Jay DeVoe.

Hickory & Oak will not have indoor seating. The market expects to have eight to ten employees when it opens.

The prices of prepackaged meals and take-out menus are still being worked out.

Hickory & Grove is one of the latest neighborhood markets to appear in the area. Supper Club is preparing to open at the Tuckahoe Mall, while VCU plans to start its own small grocery store on the Monroe Park campus.

“The market concept is a success right now across Richmond. I think we’re finding that people want to eat at home with their families, but they don’t want to cook, ”Harrison said.

DeVoe and Harrison are also co-owners of Devoedid Events, a food truck and catering company that also focuses on barbecue and Southern cuisine.

The duo previously operated Boxed + Bagged, which sold prepared lunches to students at local schools who suffered disruptions in their lunch operations last year due to the pandemic. Harrison said they unplugged Boxed + Bagged when schools returned to more normal lunch operations.

Hickory & Oak will open in a 2,400 square foot space that is currently used as a kitchen for Devoedid, which will continue to use the space for its operations.

The space is also shared with On The Mark Meals, a convenience food company.
