Activities will fill Central Park on Saturday afternoon as part of Summerfest ’96. There will be temporary tattoos, face painting and food stalls, a horseshoe tournament and a farmers market. Many other activities will include a 45-minute tour of Marion in a horse-drawn buggy, a softball tournament, and entertainment by Bob and the Boys and Bones Ownbey. The day will end with Pawnee Rock of Emporia playing at Luta Creek Stage from 6:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

A fund has been created to help with the medical expenses of Justin Bayes of Herington, who was badly burned Saturday in the demolition derby at the Marion County Fair in Hillsboro.

Members of the 1961 Marion High School graduating class are planning a 35-year reunion on Former Settlers Day.

“Special Beary Babies” born at St. Luke’s Hospital in July include Catherine Sherie Elam, born July 8; Zachary Kelly Robson, July 8; Cheyenne Jaye Jeffrey, July 15; and Kayla Marie Love, July 24.

Editor Rowena Plett shares how Kim Shields, from the Lincolnville countryside, joined a sister from California to attend the Summer Olympics in Atlanta, Georgia, while staying with another sister, who resides in Atlanta.

A group interested in genealogy met on July 30 at Lloyd and Carole Sklenar’s home and organized the Marion County Genealogical Society.

One article recounts how Mark Lucas, a music teacher at Marion High School, spent June 10-25 in Europe, traveling with 175 members of the Kansas High School choir and band under the auspices of the Kansas Music Educators Association. On the same tour were Micah Slusser of Topeka, grandson of Alden and Betty Slusser of Marion, and Ken and JoAnn Forsyth, former residents of Marion and teachers of the local school system.
