Some student borrowers plan to go on “strike” if student loan repayments resume soon.

Here’s what you need to know.

Student loans

With student loan payments set to resume after May 1, 2022, President Joe Biden may extend the student loan payment pause for an unprecedented fourth time. If that doesn’t happen, however, The Debt Collective – a collective of debtors fighting to cancel student loans – wants you to keep going. strike with your student loans. If federal student loan repayments resume after May 1, the Debt Collective is calling on all student borrowers to unite, strike collectively, and get student loan repayments of $0 a month” from the the safest way possible”. As the Debt Collective now warns against defaulting on student loans, some borrowers may simply stop paying their student loans. Why? Some may not be able to afford it, others may choose to protest, and others may not qualify for $0 per month student loan repayments.

That said, here are 5 ways to get $0 a month student loan repayments, according to the Debt Collective:

1. Obtain Student Loan Cancellation through Borrower Defense Until Repayment

The first option for getting student loan payments of $0 per month is to file a Borrower Defense Claim Until Repayment. Borrower defense to repayment is available to student borrowers who have been misled by their college or university. Student loan borrowers who qualify could obtain partial or full forgiveness of their federal student loan. You can submit a application for the borrower’s defense of student loan repayment if the school you attended was at fault or if you can show that the school violated state law relating to your student loans or educational services supplied. You can file a borrower’s defense to repayment with the U.S. Department of Education and keep your student loans in administrative forbearance while you wait for a response.

(6 Major Changes to Student Loan Forgiveness)

2. Apply for a utility debt forgiveness

You can get student loan forgiveness through public service loan forgiveness. This is a federal program created to help student borrowers who work for a qualified public service or non-profit employer. (Do you qualify for $5 billion in student loan forgiveness?). To qualify, you’ll need to work full-time (at least 40 hours per week), enroll in an income-driven repayment plan, and make at least 120 monthly student loan payments. If you have previous student loan repayments that are not eligible for student loan forgiveness, you must complete a limited waiver. This will allow you to account for previously ineligible student loan payments, such as late or partial student loan payments or ineligible student loan payments.

3. Get an income-based repayment plan of $0 per month

Yes, it is possible to pay $0 per month on your student loans. How? ‘Or’ What? Sign up for an income-driven repayment plan if you’re having trouble repaying your federal student loan. The four main income-based reimbursement plans are Income-Based Reimbursement (IBR), Pay As You Earn (PAYE), Revised Pay As You Earn (REPAYE), and Income Contingent Reimbursement (ICR). You can register with your student loan officer. Your monthly student loan payment will be based on your discretionary income and family size. Since this may have changed during the Covid-19 pandemic, now is a good time to update this information to determine your new monthly student loan payment. You can also get student loan forgiveness for your federal student loans through income-contingent repayment.

(Will repayment of student loans be postponed until 2023?)

4. Consider Student Loan Forbearance

The Debt Collective wants student borrowers to know that student loan forbearance is an option to pay $0 per month on your federal student loans. When student loan payments resume after May 1, the U.S. Department of Education wants to make sure student borrowers can transition to student loan payments smoothly. This is especially important for financially vulnerable borrowers who may be more likely to face delinquent or defaulted student loans. As such, for three months after the restart of student loan repayment, the Education Department is considering advising student loan servicers not to report any late payments to the credit bureaus. The Debt Collective encourages student borrowers to consider a student loan forbearance for three months (eg until August 2022) to defer student loan payments. It is important to note that the downside of forbearance is that interest will accrue on your federal student loans during this time. If you can’t afford to repay your student loan, it’s usually best to consider an income-driven repayment plan.

(Where Biden stands on student loan relief)

5. Stay in school

While staying in school can lead to increased student loan debt, staying in school also comes with student loan deferral. While you are a student, you will not be required to repay your student loan. The same goes for your federal student loans for six months after you graduate. However, for any unsubsidized federal student loans, interest will accrue on your student loans.

(Student loan cancellation reduced to $25,000 for borrowers).

Student loans: what you need to know

One or more of these options may work for your unique situation for getting $0 per month student loan repayments. Conversely, none of these options may work. If so, contact your student loan officer to determine your best available options. If you can’t get $0 a month for federal student loans, you can always lower your monthly payments. Above all, you should be aware that simply not paying your student loans is a bad strategy. If you are having financial difficulty, contact your student loan officer in advance. Similarly, not repaying your student loans in protest or because you think student loans are unfair will only hurt your credit score.

With student loan relief ending, be sure to assess your best options. Here are some popular ways borrowers repay their student loans:

The proceeds will benefit Gerard Place’s community kitchen this year and help feed a community with three times the needs.

BUFFALO, NY – The Buffalo and Erie County Botanic Gardens have donated more than 700 pounds of fresh, organic produce, he said on Wednesday.

The proceeds will benefit Gerard Place’s community kitchen this year and help feed a community of people whose needs were three times greater due to the COVID pandemic.

The Botanic Gardens said that after a three-year partnership, the 100% community-funded Botanical Gardens Eco-Garden has produced the largest and most diverse harvest to date.

“Located in one of Buffalo’s poorest communities for the past 20 years, Gerard Place has been a beacon of hope for those in dire need of programs and services,” said President and CEO by Gerard Place, David Zapfel. “The community of Bailey-Delavan has been considered a food desert for many years with no grocery store within walking distance of many people in need of fresh, healthy vegetables.

“The partnership with the Botanical Gardens has made a significant difference in our community. We are so grateful to the staff and volunteers at the Botanical Gardens who work so hard to provide hundreds of pounds of vegetables each summer to those in our food chain. The recipients of the vegetables are greatly appreciated and touched so much that people think of them and their health. The vegetables are also used for our healthy cooking classes which we give with our group of seniors and the families who reside here at Gerard Place. “

Gerard Place provides housing for homeless people, single parents and their families, and he empowers these parents through education, employment, job training, life skills classes and counseling.

The Eco Garden was established in 2019 with funding and support from the Josephine Goodyear Foundation, PlantWNY, the Western New York Foundation and private donors. It has since flourished immensely and has become a major passion project for the horticultural staff of the Botanical Garden.

“This year, we are proud to have successfully cultivated and harvested Chinese Pink Celery as a unique crop for Gerard Place. With a smaller stem, but a stronger flavor, this celery is best prepared cooked and then eaten raw like typical celery. The pale pink stem is perfect for stir-frying or even just sautéing. When distributing the fresh produce, Gerard Place includes simple recipes that their recipients can try out at home to incorporate some of the unique vegetables and herbs, ”said Michael Fowler, Chief Horticulturist at Eco Garden.

The best personal loan lenders for bad credit of November 2021

You might think about taking out a personal loan if you need fast cash for expenses like moving costs or vacations. A personal loan is a fixed-rate loan, usually paid off in monthly installments with several different options for term lengths.

Even if you have bad credit, you still have options for taking out a personal loan. We’ve gathered a list of lenders that are more lenient on credit score requirements.

But be careful — even though you may qualify for a loan with these lenders, with a poor credit history you will likely receive a high interest rate. You may be able to get a lower rate with other options, such as a credit card.

Insider

Upgrade

Of our top picks, Upgrade offers the lowest minimum APR. But you’ll likely pay a higher rate if your credit isn’t in good shape. With a poor credit history, you may end up paying an APR closer to 35.97%.

You’ll pay an origination fee between 2.90% and 8% with Upgrade, which will be taken from your loan proceeds. Upstart may also charge you a fee for late payments. However, you won’t pay any prepayment penalties with this lender. Once you accept your loan offer, you should get your funds as soon as the next day.

Avant

Avant is one of the easier lenders to qualify for on our list. Its minimum credit is just a guideline, not a requirement, but most Avant borrowers have a credit score between 600 and 700. Avant funds loans quickly — if the company approves your loan by 4:30 p.m. CT Monday through Friday, funds are often put into your account by the next business day.

Avant has excellent customer service hours, with its phone line open at least 13 hours every day of the week. The lender also has a strong mobile app.

Upstart

The minimum credit requirement for Upstart is 600, but if your credit score is low, you might end up paying a high APR.

Upstart’s loan repayment term options are fairly limited — you can choose between a three-year or five-year term. On the bright side, the company usually funds loans within one business day, which is useful if you need your money fast. There are no prepayment penalties with this lender.

OneMain Financial

While OneMain’s minimum APR is higher than every other lender on our top picks, there is no minimum credit score required to apply. That said, if your credit is in particularly rough shape, it may be easier to qualify for a loan with this lender. You may also be able to get your money the same day you apply.

OneMain’s standout feature is that it offers secured personal loans (loans backed by collateral such as a house or a car) as well as unsecured personal loans. This is uncommon among personal loan lenders.

LendingClub

LendingClub allows you to add a co-borrower to your loan application. So if you’re worried about not qualifying for a loan or paying a higher interest rate than you can afford, you may consider this option. The company offers loans for as low as $1,000 — the lowest on our list.

However, it will take you two to four business days to get your money, which is longer than most of the other lenders on our list. You’ll also pay an origination fee between 1% to 6% of your total loan amount, and which will be deducted from your loan proceeds.

LendingPoint

LendingPoint has the lowest minimum credit score requirement of any of our top picks, making it a good option if you can’t qualify for other lenders with your credit score. LendingPoint has a quick application process. and you may be approved the same day you apply. You can often get your funds the next business day after approval.

Unfortunately, you’re not able to take out a loan if you live in Nevada or West Virginia. You also might pay an origination fee of up to 6%, depending on the state you live in.

Credit score requirements

Each lender sets its own credit score requirements to qualify for a loan, though you’ll probably be eligible for a better rate with a higher score. For our top picks, we’ve chosen lenders that either list low minimum credit scores or have unspecified minimums but are known to accept borrowers with poor credit.

You can find your credit report for free on annualcreditreport.com from any of the three major credit bureaus weekly through April 20, 2022. While this report won’t give you your credit score, it will show you information about your credit and payment history, which lenders use to decide whether to give you a loan. Reviewing your credit report can help you know what you need to improve.

You can find your score at no cost on your credit card statement or online account. You can also pay for it from a credit reporting agency.

Credit scores range from 300 to 850. Here’s how scores break down, according to FICO:

  • Very poor: 300 to 579
  • Fair: 580 to 669
  • Good: 670 to 739
  • Very good: 740 to 799
  • Exceptional: 800 to 850

When you check your rates with many companies, your credit score won’t be impacted because most lenders will only generate a soft credit inquiry when displaying personalized rates. However, if you accept a loan, lenders will likely perform a hard credit inquiry, which may negatively affect your credit score. A hard inquiry gives a lender a full look at your credit history.

If you don’t qualify for a loan with the lender you prefer or are being offered a higher APR than you can afford, here are some tips you might think about to improve your credit score:

  • Request and review a copy of your credit report. Look for any mistakes on your report that may be hurting your score. If so, reach out to the credit bureau to talk about correcting the errors.
  • Maintain low credit card balances. Having a credit utilization ratio — the percentage of your total credit you’re using — of 30% or less will prove to lenders that you can aptly handle your credit.
  • Create a system for paying bills on time. Your payment history makes up a significant percentage of your credit score, and lenders prefer to see consistent and reliable past payments. Design calendar reminders or automatic payments so you don’t fall behind.

Other personal loans we considered

  • TD Bank personal loans. While TD Bank offers relatively low maximum APRs on its personal loans, the company only lends to borrowers in 15 states and Washington, DC, so it may not be accessible depending on where you live.
  • Universal Credit personal loans. Universal Credit has a low minimum credit score requirement of 580, but it takes longer to get your money than with our top picks.
  • OppLoans personal loans. OppLoans doesn’t have a minimum credit score to be eligible, but its APR range is significantly higher than any lender on our list, spanning from 59% to 160%. Read Insider’s full review here.
  • Payoff Personal Loan. Payoff offers great minimum APRs to those with good credit scores, but its minimum requirement of 640 is higher than all of our top picks.
  • Prosper Prosper Personal Loan. Like Payoff, you need a minimum credit score of 640 to qualify for a loan from Prosper. Read Insider’s full review of Prosper.
  • Peerform personal loans. Peerform offers competitive APRs on its loans and only requires a minimum credit score of 600 to qualify, but its minimum loan amount of $4,000 is higher than our top picks.
  • First Tech Credit Union personal loans. Although First Tech offers small minimum loan amounts, you have to join the credit union to be eligible to take out a loan from the company, an added step none of our other picks require.

Which lender is the most trustworthy?

To help you make a decision, we’ve compared each institution’s Better Business Bureau score. The BBB measures businesses’ trustworthiness based on factors like their responsiveness to consumer complaints, truthfulness in advertising, and clarity about business practices. Here is each company’s score:

With the exception of LendingClub and Avant, all of our top picks are rated A- or higher by the BBB. Keep in mind that a high BBB score does not guarantee a positive relationship with a lender, and that you should continue to do research and talk to others who have used the company to get the most comprehensive information possible.

The BBB rates Avant a B- in trustworthiness because of government actions against this business. LendingClub doesn’t currently have a rating because its business profile is currently being updated.

In 2018, the Federal Trade Commission filed a complaint against LendingClub for deceptive lending practices, including charging hidden fees, incorrectly leading customers to believe they’d be approved for a loan, and continuing to charge consumers who canceled their automatic payments or had paid off their loans in full. LendingClub is also charged with taking out double payments from accounts and not providing consumers with privacy notices. The case is currently pending.

Due to LendingClub’s recent history, you might prefer to use a different personal loan company.

Frequently asked questions

What are bad credit loans?

Bad credit loans are aimed at borrowers with a low credit score or limited credit history. These loans have fixed rates and are either secured or unsecured, usually repaid in monthly installments over the course of several years.

If you have a bad credit score, you aren’t immediately disqualified from getting a loan. However, your chances of getting approved are lessened and if you are eligible, you’ll likely receive a higher rate than someone with a better credit score.

Each lender has its own standards to determine whether to offer a loan to those with bad credit. Some lenders are more strict than others, so you should shop around before deciding which one to use.

How does the coronavirus impact bad credit loans?

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, many lenders have adjusted interest rates or modified their loan offerings to help minimize risk. This includes both traditional brick-and-mortar banks and online lenders.

That said, if you’re a new borrower with poor credit looking for a loan, you may find it more difficult to qualify in this uncertain economic climate. If you already have a loan, you may have the opportunity to defer payments or waive fees, depending on your lender.

How did we pick the best bad credit loans?

Personal Finance Insider’s mission is to help smart people make the best decisions they can with their money. With that in mind, we looked at several online personal loan lenders closely. We evaluated multiple factors to determine the best personal loan lenders for people with bad credit, including:

  • Annual percentage rates: The lower the interest rate on your loan, the better. So we centered our choices on lenders that still offer low maximum rates for those with poor credit history.
  • Loan term length: We prioritized personal loans with a variety of repayment lengths.
  • Loan amount range: We looked for lenders with small personal loan minimums, and did not put any lenders with a minimum above $2,000 on the list of our top picks. While you may need more money, it could be a better choice to take out less and save on the high APR that may come with a bad credit score.
  • Minimum credit score: Depending on your credit score, you may be eligible to take out a loan from some lenders and might not qualify with others. We picked lenders with low minimum credit scores so you have the best chance of qualifying, even with a poor credit history.
  • Trustworthiness: Borrowing from an honest lender is often a chief concern for many people. With the exception of LendingClub, we chose lenders with an A or above grade from the Better Business Bureau to provide the most transparent lenders possible. However, LendingClub is currently not rated by the BBB because of a pending government action.

What are alternatives to bad credit loans?

While personal loans can be a solid option to get money fast, there might be cheaper avenues available to you:

  • Ask friends or family. While you may feel uncomfortable asking friends or family for a loan, you may be able to reach a deal with smaller payments than through an official lender.
  • Get a paycheck advance. Some banks will allow you to receive your paycheck a couple of days early, and you’re able use apps that let you get a portion of money you’ve already earned in a pay period. You can also request a paycheck advance from your employer. However, taking a paycheck advance isn’t free — you’ll often be charged fees that come out of your earnings when you receive them.
  • Apply for a credit card. You may also think about a credit card instead of a personal loan. This might be especially helpful if your credit isn’t in the best shape and you are eligible for a lower APR with a credit card than a personal loan lender.
  • Look for aid from a local nonprofit or charity. Many local organizations have programs designed for short-term assistance for those in need. You can find a list of some near you here.
  • Work part-time in the gig economy. You can make money on your own time with gig work like rideshare and food delivery apps. These extra jobs might enable you to earn enough to eliminate the need for a loan.

Are bad credit loans legitimate?

Yes, personal loans with a reputable lender are absolutely safe to borrow. Look over reviews of the company, dig for more information, and disregard offers that feel too good to be true. Search for personal loans that are backed by a Member FDIC bank or NCUA-accredited credit union.

You can find potential scams by looking out for these common indicators of fraud:

  • The lender doesn’t request your payment history or credit score.
  • The lender’s website isn’t secured.
  • The lender ensures approval.
  • The lender isn’t transparent about fees.
  • The lender coerces you into taking out a loan instantly.

What can you use a personal loan for?

You’re able to use a personal loan for many purposes, though the list changes depending on the lender. Some common options include:

Every reason available isn’t listed here, and you should reach out to your individual lender to ask about what choices it offers.

How much will a personal loan cost?

This depends on how much you want to borrow, what APR you get from your lender, and how long you take to pay off the loan.

The higher the loan amount and APR, the more expensive a loan will be. With a longer term length, you will split up your payments over an extended period so you’ll make smaller monthly payments, but it will cost you more total interest.

How quickly can you get your money?

Depending on the lender, you may be able to get your money as soon as the same day you apply. Often a lender will send the money relatively quickly after the application is approved, but there is usually no guarantee on the speed of the approval process.

The Northern Shenandoah Valley Master Gardener Association hosted its FallFest 2021 at Richard’s Fruit Market in Frederick County. Volunteers from the association and the Virginia Cooperative Extension Office organized the event to educate people about fall gardening. Volunteers organized demonstrations, gave lectures and organized hands-on activities. The event also featured performances by local musicians, many of whom live in Westminster Canterbury.

The association previously hosted the event at Belle Grove Historic Plantation, Jennifer Flitton Adams, a volunteer master gardener, said on Saturday. A hurricane and the COVID-19 pandemic thwarted previous efforts to organize the festival. Another event was planned in Belle Grove for the weekend.

“So we decided to have him at Richard’s and they were extremely generous and helpful to us,” said Flitton Adams. “They have their own festivals, so they had a really good setup for us.”

FallFest serves as an educational event.

“We’re just looking to educate people about fall gardening and what can be planted this time of year, like bulbs for example, and fall cleanup,” said Flitton Adams. “We hope to educate the public and make them more aware of the master gardeners and know that we are here as a resource.

“We are here as a resource for anyone in the community who has questions or would like to learn more about horticulture,” said Flitton Adams.

Elaine Specht, president of the association, roasted marshmallows on sticks over a fire and made s’mores for young and old.

“It’s just a good time to take people out in the fall,” Specht said. “People always think of gardening in the spring, but there are some things you want to let go in the fall – put your garden to bed or there are certain veggies you can grow in the fall – so let us know. let’s talk.”

A group of festival-goers gathered at Helen Lake’s demonstration of how to make art with pressed flowers. Lake works as a volunteer master gardener and horticultural therapist. Lake said she developed the business while working in Westminster Canterbury.

“(The activity) helps people with dementia be pressured into making decisions, you know, boosts their cognitive memory of color, texture, smell sometimes, to be creative and that’s been really helpful,” Lake said.

She also used the activity for autistic children.

“So it’s a therapeutic activity but it’s also fun,” Lake said.

Gillian Peterson and her daughter Ullie, from Winchester, created a piece with pressed flowers and doilies during the demonstration. Peterson said she enjoyed attending the fall event and the size meant less walking. Peterson said she has worked with many volunteer master gardeners. She now teaches art at Evendale Elementary School in Frederick County.

Peterson collected flower bulbs from one of the tents the gardeners handed out for free. Peterson said she was planting flowers in her garden at her new home in Winchester. She learned from a gardener how to plant certain bulbs to prevent squirrels from digging them up.

BOSTON, October 5, 2021 / PRNewswire-PRWeb / – Food Gardening Network, publisher of Food Gardening magazine, published its October 2021 issue, featuring their list of five vegetables you can plant in a cold frame or prepare now for a spring harvest.

In the article and accompanying video for 5 Vegetables to Plant in October, Editor-in-Chief Amanda MacArthur sharing tips on using a cold frame to grow three crops in cool weather for an early winter harvest, plus two other vegetables you can start right now for an early spring harvest.

MacArthur writes, “There really is no ‘end of season’ for a gardener, no matter what time of year. There is still a lot to do in your kitchen garden to start spring crops.”

The five featured vegetables include:

1. Onions – Onions are hardy and can withstand cold temperatures, especially when in a cold frame. As long as they have loose soil, they will grow almost anywhere.

2. Carrots – Sow carrot seeds directly into the ground in loose soil and you will be able to eat them in about 60 days. Of course, as long as they don’t bloom, you can leave your carrots in the ground until the ground freezes.

3. Spinach – You can still get a harvest of spinach at the end of the season, but as long as it is in a cold frame, your spinach will go dormant during the winter and start growing again in February.

4. Arugula – Arugula is a great addition to any salad and is hardy enough to grow in a cold setting during the winter. Sow the seeds about an inch apart in rows six inches apart. Cover lightly with soil as arugula seeds need sunlight to germinate.

5. Garlic – Want to get a head start on next season’s harvest? Plant the garlic now. Your garlic will form strong roots over the winter and be ready to take off after the first thaw, for a quick spring harvest.

The October issue of Food Gardening Magazine also features articles and videos like Planning a Garden with the Best Pickles and Preserves, which encourages gardeners to think ahead of all the vegetables that make great foods. to keep, so they can plan for a more sustainable and longer-range crop for next year.

Another exciting task in the harvest season is saving the seeds of the vegetables you love. In How to Get Seeds from Your Vegetables to Save for Next Year, MacArthur walks us through collecting, washing, drying, and storing seeds for next season. In addition, the editorial director of Food Gardening magazine Norann Oleson will share 10 ideas for all those pumpkins around the house in What to do with post-harvest pumpkins.

The October issue of Food Gardening Magazine offers readers four feature articles, four how-to videos (including a fun tutorial on three different ways to marinate vegetables), and three close-ups from the collection highlighting carrots, pumpkins. and rosemary. These collections offer comprehensive and in-depth information about a single fruit, herb or vegetable, from starting seeds to pest and disease control, and from nutritional information to delicious recipes.

is investigating the community’s needs related to access to food, an issue that is not new to Lake County, but that surfaced with rambling repercussions after the pandemic took hold. Around the same time, St. George’s Episcopal Church and Community Meals noticed an increase in participation in community meals and pantry services.

The survey found that many families in Lake County face distinct barriers when it comes to accessing food, including affordability, transportation and stigma. In response, the Lake County Build a Generation’s (LCBAG) Food Access Coalition began a partnership with St. George to launch a mobile pantry.

About a year later, after months of fundraising and renovating an old white school bus, the mobile pantry is fully operational, serving three communities in Lake County on a weekly basis. In addition to the mobile pantry, St. George is also renovating the pantry kitchen, allowing for an expansion of St. George’s offerings.

“Access to food has been an issue in Lake County for a long time,” said Brittany Woodrum, mobile food coordinator and administrator of St. George, who added that at the height of the pandemic, Safeway , Lake County’s only commercial grocery store, regularly ran out of food. But even before that, Lake County’s remote location led to disproportionate prices for produce and other goods, making food unaffordable for some families. “Even though these are old issues, the gravity of the situation really came to light last year, and we knew we had to adapt to meet families where they are.”

St. George started mobile pantry services last month after about a year of fundraising with LCBAG. After receiving $ 25,000 through a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the coalition purchased an old school bus and renovated it with shelves, a refrigerator, a freezer and a generator.

Four times a week, Woodrum, along with other St. George staff and volunteers, load the bus with fruits, vegetables, canned goods, tortillas, drinks and other food items. After filling the bus, the team delivers food to three communities in Lake County, including Mountain View Village West on Tuesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., Mountain Valley Estates on Friday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. and Lake Fork on Saturday 9 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Although the pantry has only been up and running for a month, Woodrum said 40 to 50 people show up for the Mountain View West and Lake Fork mobile pantry service, while around 15 people attend the pantry. eat from Mountain Valley. And since the bus started its schedule, Woodrum said there has been an increase in St. George’s pantry service from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesday. Any excess food or expired food from the drive is either handed over to community members with animals or composted with the Cloud City Conservation Center (C4).

“It’s both good and bad,” said Woodrum, who added that about 200 people frequent the weekly pantry in St. George, in addition to the mobile pantry numbers. “We want more people to use us as a resource, but it also shows how important the problem of food inequalities is. “

Last year also marked the first year that St. George paid for food to store the church pantry. Before that, the church relied on donations of salvaged food from Safeway, grocery stores in Summit County, or donations of fresh produce from farms in Chaffee County or C4. Last year, however, St. George spent about $ 100,000 on food from US Foods and has forecast a similar expense this year. Although the church still has partnerships with groups like C4 and Safeway, US Foods is now the main supplier to St. George.

“The need has really increased,” said Woodrum, “and we’re sort of transforming ourselves to meet that need.”

In addition to the mobile pantry, St. Geroge has also started a $ 500,000 kitchen renovation that will significantly expand the church’s offerings. When complete, the space will include a fully functional commercial kitchen with major appliances and more pantry space. The new kitchen, slated for completion by December, will allow St. George to host more community meals while increasing the shelf life of pantry items through canning and other methods. conservation.

Woodrum added that the space is for community education events on healthy food and cooking techniques, and people looking to sell homemade food as a small business can use the kitchen to avoid fines for non-compliance by cooking at home.

“We’re really excited about all of this,” said Woodrum. “The food insecurity in Lake County is not going to go away, but I hope these are good steps to address these issues.”

Immortals Gaming Club, the professional video game organization backed by Meg Whitman and AEG, is restructuring its business as it seeks a more efficient and financially viable esports business.

IGC separates its brands into four distinct business units: the group’s Overwatch League franchise (the Los Angeles Valiant), a matchmaking platform (Gamers Club), a Brazil-based pro team (MIBR) and Immortals (which includes its main League of Legends the franchise). Each individual unit has a positive cash flow, according to the company, which plans to enter 2022 with more revenue recorded than it earned in 2021.

Professional video gaming has struggled in the COVID-19 pandemic, which came just after a three-year span that saw massive investments in space and a rush to create franchise leagues with structures similar to the NFL or NBA. Today, some of the most important organizations in the industry are starting to rethink their long-term business strategy.

“We realized that it wasn’t going to be efficient for us to build this conglomerate portfolio that was meant to be everything for everyone and every publisher at all times,” said Ari Segal, who was elevated to Co-Director general of IGC under the changes. “And when you’ve decided you’re not going to be the Everything Store for esports teams, then you can sharpen your pencil on what makes sense. And that, along with the need for the business model, brought us to adopt this more brand-specific approach. ”

Whitman, a longtime tech executive who led eBay and Hewlett-Packard, led IGC’s recent $ 26 million fundraiser and is the group’s largest shareholder. Other investors include entertainment and theaters giant AEG, movie studio Lionsgate, the family of financier Michael Milken and Steve Kaplan, co-founder of Oaktree Capital and co-owner of the NBA Memphis Grizzlies.

The Los Angeles-based IGC wants to bring a more responsible and fiscally sustainable model to an industry that still sees a lot of money wasted, said Steve Cohen, IGC board member and director of strategy at AEG.

“So you’re not just burning money in the hopes of a big homerun or increasing the underlying value, you’re actually a business in and of itself, feeding on it- same, “Cohen said in an interview. “It allows you to look up and look at new opportunities as your risk profile goes down. You no longer make crazy bets.

IGC was previously set up in what Segal called a “matrix model,” where large areas of business like sales or marketing are managed by an executive who does so across each brand. IGC’s separation from these units, which includes installing frames at the top of each vertical, is driven by three main goals, Segal explained.

First, given the cultural specifics of individual esports titles and organizations, the matrix model meant that no high-level executive thought only of the Immortals or MIBR, who have different fan bases in different parts of the world. This reorganization installs a person in each unit who specifically thinks about the business, marketing and community opportunities specific to their brand.

Second, many large esports organizations are run by founders, who have broad powers over the entire organization. Creating leadership positions in each brand, Segal said, has given IGC a chance to recruit more talent at the executive level. Newly hired Jordan Sherman, who worked for Gen.G, Los Angeles Clippers and Major League Baseball, has been named CEO of Immortals; Roberta Coelho, co-creator of Game XP, has been hired as CEO of MIBR.

“We saw an arbitrage opportunity in the job market,” Segal said.

Third, pro esports are teeming with what Segal has called “channel conflict”. Some game publishers have restrictions on a single group controlling multiple teams. MIBR, for example, cannot compete in the best League of Legends Tour in Brazil because Immortals compete in the North American Tour. This change could allow the company to explore new opportunities that otherwise would not have been possible.

“Creating these business units which are individually liquid and can be individually capitalized allows us to be completely flexible,” he said. “And if the market opportunity warrants being truly and completely independent, we have now set up the entire holding company in order to have as many options as possible.”

This can also be true for selling. Over the past year, several reports have indicated that IGC is buying Valiant, its Overwatch League team. The group has already offloaded its Call of Duty League team and the OpTic Gaming brand it used, as well as the Houston-based Overwatch League franchise. Segal declined to comment on any potential sale or acquisition discussions.

Immortals is one of the most valuable esports organizations in the world, although the shutdown of live events by the COVID-19 pandemic and the tightening of advertising budgets have had a pretty drastic impact on the group’s operations. IGC’s valuation was cut by more than half last year from its figure of around $ 260 million in 2019, according to Forbes‘annual rankings. Income fell 23%, according to the magazine.

Segal declined to provide financial details, but said the company was open to mergers and acquisitions in both directions. He said IGC was happy with its recent releases and purchases, including the 2018 deals for MIBR and Gamers Club.

“We will relentlessly pursue maximizing value for all of our stakeholders,” said Segal. “Which means that everything we own is always for sale, and whatever is available in the market is always something we are looking to acquire. Anyone who tells you otherwise is not doing their shareholders right. “

TOPEKA, Kansas (WIBW) – Kansans receiving state food assistance benefits will see a permanent increase in a few categories on October 1.

Kansas Department of Children and Families Secretary Laura Howard said Kansans who receive food assistance will receive a permanent increase in the maximum benefit amount starting October 1, 2021.

“Access to healthy food is a key part of a family’s well-being,” Howard said. “This permanent increase helps us fight against food insecurity, especially among children, which has a positive impact on the overall health of our community”

Howard said the change is happening because the 2018 Farm Bill ordered the US Department of Agriculture to reassess the Thrifty Food plan, which is used to calculate the benefits of food aid. Thanks to the 2021 adjustment, she said the maximum amount allowed had increased to $ 250 for a household of one. The maximum amount for households of two or more people has also been increased.

According to Howard, the following annual adjustments were also made:

  • Gross and net income caps have increased
  • Maximum deduction for excess housing will drop from $ 569 to $ 597
  • Standard utility allowance will increase from $ 364 to $ 392
  • Limited utility allowance will increase from $ 247 to $ 286
  • Telephone standard will drop from $ 35 to $ 37
  • The standard medical deduction will remain at $ 175

Howard said most households will see changes in benefits for October to reflect the annual adjustments.

Additionally, Howard said the USDA Food and Nutrition Service temporarily increased food aid benefits by 15% from March 2021 to September 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to Howard, the temporary 15% increase will end on September 30 and will be replaced by the new amounts. Overall, she said food aid recipients will see a 10% increase over benefit levels before March 2021.

Howard said the October 1 maximum benefits, gross income and net income limits for food aid are as follows:

Household size Maximum benefits from October 1 Maximum gross income on October 1 October 1 maximum net income
1 $ 250 $ 1,396 $ 1,074
2 $ 459 $ 1,888 $ 1,452
3 $ 658 $ 2,379 $ 1,830
4 $ 835 $ 2,871 $ 2,209
5 $ 992 $ 3,363 $ 2,587
6 $ 1,190 $ 3,855 $ 2,965
7 $ 1,316 $ 4,347 $ 3,344
8 $ 1,504 $ 4,839 $ 3,722
Each additional person + $ 188 + $ 492 + $ 379

Howard said the minimum allowance is $ 20 and all food assistance benefits are based on household size, household income and allowable deductions.
