The Genealogical Society to host the virtual program of the director of the Vallejo Museum – The Reporter

The Solano County Genealogical Society will host a virtual program on the history of the Mare Island shipyard on June 25.

Jim Kern, Executive Director of the Vallejo Naval and Historical Museum, will lead the presentation on the history of the shipyard, from the pre-Civil War era to the 20th century world wars until the mid-1990s, starting at 10 a.m. .

Company organizers have said that “this special event” is free and open to the public as part of the organization’s 40th anniversary celebration.

Founded in 1854, the Vallejo Shipyard was the United States’ first naval base on the West Coast and has played an important role in the city’s history. It was once one of the busiest shipyards in the world. It closed in 1996 and has been open to the public since 2004.

Kern has been the Executive Director of the Town Historical Museum, located in the Old Town Hall on Marin Street, since 1989. It has five galleries dedicated to the history of Vallejo and Mare Island, including a periscope under -functional marine.
