Randy Mazey asked for a quality start from Jackson Wolf and he got a complete playing gem.

The southpaw led eighth-seeded West Virginia to a shocked second round against seeded Texas 5-1 as the Mountaineers advanced into the Big 12 tournament winner’s range.

“To be honest, I knew how big this game was,” Wolf said. “Looking at the support, I know it’s going to make our road to the Championship game a little easier if we can get this win under our belts, and so… I had a goal for every throw that I threw this. evening and I gave it. all I had tonight.

Wolf fought the Longhorns from the pitcher’s mound, allowing just one run on five hits in the contest with seven strikeouts and five walks. Mazey was hoping the ace would give his team triple-digit shots, which he did – pitching a total of 138 over the nine innings.

Wolf (6-5) achieved the jewel with some clutch performance in his last heats. In the seventh with a 3-1 Mountaineer lead, he let the Longhorns charge the bases with two outs, but came out of the jam by forcing a brief pop fly. He gave another tight time performance in the eighth, hitting the side after allowing a start walk.

“Eliminating the free passes and eliminating the damage that the free passes could cause was pretty huge.” “Once I got deeper into the game, I felt like I understood my body even more as the innings went on, and I felt better. in the eighth and ninth innings I made one through seven. So I was determined to finish this baseball game tonight.

West Virginia gave him early support. Hudson Byorick landed a solo homerun against Texas starter Ty Madden, the Big 12 Pitcher of the Year, in the second inning to put the first inning on the board. WVU added two more in the fifth for reassurance.

Madden (6-4) made a good outing himself, giving up three hits and three runs in 6.2 innings while suppressing five, but was credited with the loss. He was replaced by Cole Quintanilla, before Tanner Witt finished the last 1.2 innings.

Kevin Brophy recorded the only multi-shot game for West Virginia, hitting a double and a triple while crossing the plate twice. Alec Burns added a pair of runs and a hit, while Byorick Homer added another RBI.

“We had a bunch of guys who threw their hearts out tonight and played as well as they could for the Mountaineers,” said Mazey.

Trey Kennedy recorded the only RBI of the game for Texas with a solo home run from Wolf in the sixth inning.

The climbers prepare for the next round, in which they will face the winner of Game Four / Five between Oklahoma State and Oklahoma. Mazey has a major advantage ahead, however, as his team is armed with a new enclosure.

“Full games in a tournament context are worth their weight in gold,” said Mazey.

This contest is currently scheduled to start at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU, but its actual start time depends on Game 8 between No.2 TCU and No.3 Texas Tech.
