Tom Ingram Ask a Master Gardener

I’ve heard a lot about “pollinator gardens” lately. What is the difference between a pollinator garden and an ordinary garden? —DT

Pollinator gardens can be as beautiful as any standard garden, but they have an additional purpose: plants in pollinator gardens are selected not only for their beauty, but also for the way they attract and support pollinating insects. . Here’s why it matters.

Man currently produces around 1,400 plants for food and industrial herbal products. Of these 1,400 plants, approximately 80% of them require pollination. Additionally, more than 50% of our edible fats and oils come from pollinated plants, while almost all fruit and grain crops require pollination. Ultimately, we would be in a “world” of suffering without pollinating insects. So many gardeners are changing their view of gardens to include plants that support and encourage pollinator habitats. As master gardeners, we are all for this idea.

If you are going to start changing your perspective on your flower garden to lean more towards supporting pollinating insects, you should plan to include both nectariferous and larval plants for butterflies. Nectar is the liquid product of flowers that serves as food and fuel for many pollinators. Nectar plants are those we are likely familiar with such as Columbine, Yarrow, Aster, Agastache, False Indigo, Ageratum, Coreopsis, Echinacea, Joe Pye Weed and a host of others.

While these and other flowers will serve to attract pollinating insects to your garden, you will need a few additional plants called “host plants” to keep them there. Pollinating insects look for host plants to deposit their eggs. The challenge for many gardeners is that we have been conditioned to try to keep insects from eating on our plants. But host plants are grown knowing full well that if you are successful in attracting pollinating insects to your landscape, they will likely be eaten right down to the stems.

Good host plants include dill, fennel, parsley, chives and milkweed. Many pollinator gardeners set aside a special area of their garden for host plants, as they tend not to be as colorful as the flowers we are more used to. Personally, I like to mix.

Another thing to keep in mind when turning your garden into a pollinator garden is to try to plant your flowers in larger groups of the same flowers than you might be used to. A larger grouping of plants not only helps attract pollinators to your garden, but also provides a denser buffet, so they don’t have to waste energy moving between scattered plants in your landscape. Once they find a place where their needs are met, they are more likely to call your garden home.

Flowering time is another topic to consider when planning your pollinator garden. Since you’re trying to provide a season-long resource for your pollinating insects, you’ll want to try picking plants that bloom at different times. This saves pollinators from having to look elsewhere when your flowers are past their blooming season.

Plants that house your pollinators are another good addition. Honeysuckle is a good one because it not only provides shelter but is also a source of nectar.

Another addition to consider for your pollinator garden is something called a butterfly puddler. Puddles are like birdbaths but shallower. These shallow puddles contain not only water but also rocks for butterflies to stand on while having a drink.

Pollinator feeders also make great additions to your pollinator garden. Pollinator feeders can be as simple as a tray type bird feeder, but instead of filling your feeder with birdseed, pollinator feeders can be filled with overripe bananas or sliced oranges. The uneaten rinds of cantaloupes or watermelons also provide a good source of energy in your pollinator garden.

Another thing you should consider adding to your pollinator garden is a rocky feature. It’s a fancy term for “the rocks in your backyard.” I’m not talking about a lot of small rocks but a few big rocks. These larger rocks absorb heat and can provide a good place for butterflies to warm up as they can only fly when temperatures reach appropriate levels.

Native plants should be at the top of your list to add to your garden, as local pollinating insects are the most habituated and adapted to native plants in our area. We have good information about native plants on our website (tulsamastergardeners.org). Simply click on Lawn and Garden Help, then on Flowers.

The Buffalo Bills are enjoying their greatest success on the court since the early ’90s. Three straight playoff appearances, back-to-back AFC East titles and three straight 10+ win seasons.

Bills quarterback Josh Allen has become a league superstar and head coach Sean McDermott and general manager Brandon Beane have done a terrific job of reshaping the organization, from the front office to the coaching staff and players on the field.

Bills fans had fun going to the games, but if you were hoping to pay the same price for tickets as you did in 2021, that’s not going to happen.

The Bills have announced ticket price increases. The team says more than half of general admission tickets will see a price increase of $3 to $8.50 per game.

What about season ticket holders?

Season ticket prices increase, on average, to just over $11.50 per ticket. It depends on your seat to determine your new price for the 2022 season. The average price per season pass will be $113; which includes sales tax.

Chris Colleary, vice president of ticket sales and service at Bills, says they think it’s “fair market value.”

“We compare the prices of other teams; we compare our historical prices. We compare the value of this seat like a subscription, the value like a single game. We evaluate each seat, each row. There are seats that can go up to ‘at $3 a set and there are others that can increase by $20 per play. Seats that increase by $20 per play can be in the first five rows of level 100 compared to a seat at level 300 So we factor all of those things into it,” Colleary said.

Opponents the Bills will face in 2022 at home are also considered, such as the Green Bay Packers, Tennessee Titans and Pittsburgh Steelers at Orchard Park. However, there is one less home game this season than in 2021. This is due to the NFL’s move to 17 games; the AFC had an extra home game in 2021, so it’s the NFC’s turn in 2022.

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – Anticipation is growing as the 2022 spring season officially begins this weekend for women’s collegiate lacrosse teams nationwide. Philadelphia’s Six NCAA Division I women’s programs – Drexel University, LaSalle University, St. Joseph’s University, Temple University, University of Pennsylvania and Villanova University – will all take the field for their home openers with amazing daytime hairstyles lady on behalf of families overcome by cancer as part of the “No Place Like Home” initiative in support of the HEADstrong Foundation.

This season, teams are actively participating in Game Hair Havoc, a fundraising campaign powered by the HEADstrong Foundation in which varsity teams use game day hairstyles as a mechanism to raise awareness and funds to support the cause. From battle braids to high buns, each of the Philly Six players will show their spirit and support for those who have lost their hair due to the side effects of their cancer treatment. As each of these teams compete on the pitch this season, it’s a special way for them to come together for the greater good. The proceeds raised will be used to finance nights of accommodation and comfort for the families invited to Nick’s House.

The HEADstrong Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides emotional, financial, logistical, and residential support to local and national families. The organization is headquartered in suburban Philadelphia. Locally, HEADstrong operates Nick’s House, a guest residence for displaced families in the area seeking advanced cancer care and clinical trials.

“Nick’s House gives the home ground advantage to displaced families in our area in the fight of their lives,” said Jill Batcheller, head coach of Villanova University women’s lacrosse. “It is our privilege to use our platform and our hairstyles to show our support for those affected by this disease and those who have had to leave the comfort of their homes to continue their treatment. HEADstrong is a cause very close to all of our hearts. Each of our programs has been impacted by the realities of cancer and we are so proud to be united in this way. Together, we will begin our 2022 seasons by making a statement against cancer.

Given the organization’s local roots and ties to the sport, Batcheller and Drexel University’s Kim Hillier were inspired to lead the effort to rally the six NCAA D1 programs. Batcheller, a Philadelphia native, spent the past three seasons in charge of the Drexel Dragons before accepting the head coaching job at Villanova last summer. Hillier, who replaced Batcheller at Drexel last summer, was ironically a classmate and personal friend of HEADstrong founder Nicholas Colleluori at Hofstra University. After accepting his new job, Hillier reached out to the Colleluori family to express his heartfelt support to honor his late friend.

“We are so lucky to have these amazing programs in our backyard and even more honored to call them partners in the fight,” said Cheryl Colleluori, President of HEADstrong and mom to Nick. “It’s empowering, inspiring and uplifting to see all six Philadelphia D1 teams embrace our cause with open arms and use their first home games this season to unite. There is truly ‘No Place Like Home’ and we are proud to play our position for those who fight locally and those who are displaced in our region in search of the best possible treatment.”

Philly Six’s No Place Like Home Game Schedule
12/2 – Drexel University vs. Wagner (Vidas Field), 12 p.m.
2/12 – LaSalle University v. Iona (McCarthy Stadium), 12 p.m.

Aiming for victory at risk of losing and bowling five bowlers were two non-negotiable things for Virat Kohli, India’s most successful Test captain.

Having taken over as Test captain of MS Dhoni in the middle of a series in Australia in 2014, Kohi changed the way India played the five-day game.

Substituting for the injured Dhoni in the Adelaide Test, Kohli didn’t once think of a draw with India requiring 364 carries in 98 overs on day five. His aggressive approach rubbed off on the whole squad as the visitors came terrifyingly close to a famous win before losing the game by 48 points. ”At no time did we think of running after the score. We came here to play positive cricket. No kind of negativity is welcome in this group. That’s the kind of conviction we came here with,’ Kohli said after the defeat which sowed the seeds for many famous overseas wins during his seven years as captain. “It was one of our best performances away from home in the last two or three years, and I’m really proud of how the boys played in this game.” but Kohli ensured that India became the team for all conditions, he took the place and removed himself from the equation. Five Bowler Theory That Reaped Rich Rewards ========================== Before Kohli, winning a test overseas was considered a big deal, but when he shocked the cricketing world by stepping down as captain on Saturday, his rich heritage included a team mentality that was content with nothing less than a series win. What allowed Kohli to consistently win Test matches abroad was the fast bowling resources at his disposal. The likes of Mohammad Shami, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav and Jasprit Bumrah flourished under his leadership becoming India’s most formidable bowling attack of all time. Former head coach MSK Prasad, whose majority of tenure coincided with Kohli’s reign as captain in all three formats, has explained how the champion hitter contributed to India’s resounding success in all formats. ”First of all, I think he’s built a winning culture next door, especially away from home. He introduced the five bowler theory and the fitness culture he helped change before that,’ Prasad, who thought Kohli had three more years of captaincy in him, told PTI. ”He brought aggression to the side. Kohli and the rest of the stakeholders created a bench of fast bowlers who helped us take 20 wickets when we were traveling. ===== Kohli had managed to build a solid pace attack for all conditions, but the x factor was missing, which was ultimately provided by Jasprit Bumrah, who since his test debut in South Africa four years ago years, became one of the best bowlers in the world. ”I still remember that in 2017 we decided to prepare Bumrah for an away series. We gave him a rest after limited cricket and told him to focus on his red ball cricket. He took six wickets in Ranji’s semi-final that year and that convinced Virat and all of us that he could excel in test cricket,’ Prasad recalled.

Rohit Sharma the opener turned out to be a masterstroke ================================ Although the decision to push Rohit to the top of the order to resurrect his Test career was suggested by head coach Ravi Shastri, Kohli has completely bought into the idea.

This not only revived Rohit’s Test career but also gave the team the shot maker the team was looking for at the top of the list. Kohli wanted his bowlers to take 20 wickets and his batters to make runs and not just survive. Bowlers have delivered on that promise more often than not, but batting remains a work in progress with a star-studded line-up coming overseas on several occasions, most recently to South Africa. ‘One of the best captains ever’ ======================== Former India captain and head coach Dilip Vengsarkar, who gave to his Kohli his great international cricketing chance after following his career from U-16 level, believes it would be difficult to match Kohli’s exemplary record as captain. ”40 wins in 68 tests (fourth in overall wins category). The archives speak in glowing terms of his captaincy. His positive outlook on the game, he always looked to bowl five bowlers which could sometimes backfire but that’s how he played the game. In the end the team won many games with this approach,” Vengsarkar said.

Kohli has endured her fair share of lows with all-time highs. He led the team to Test victories in England and South Africa in addition to the series victory in Australia, but could not get his hands on the ICC World Test Championship trophy as he was the best team in this two-year cycle.

India won a series in Australia for the very first time in 2018-19 in addition to reaching new heights in limited overs cricket.

”The success rate under him in all formats is outstanding. We were number one in all formats of the game. We beat every team in their own backyard in limited overs cricket. “However, a low point would definitely be not being able to win series in South Africa and England in 2018. Both series were close but we ended up on the wrong side,” Prasad lamented.

  • The New England Patriots took the clocks back to a bygone era of football on Monday night.
  • In beating the Buffalo Bills 14-10, the Pats executed the ball 46 times and threw just three passes.
  • In NFL history, four teams have won games with five or fewer passing attempts, and the New York Jets have lost two of those games.

Even when they’re not playing, the New York Jets – * my * New York Jets – sort of find themselves the butt of the joke.

In case you missed it, during the New England Patriots Monday Night football game against the Buffalo Bills, the legendary Pats head coach pulled out a playbook that looked like it came out of the 1940s when the Patriots played. ran the ball 46 times, while trying only three passes. Defeating Josh Allen and the Bills in their own backyard by a score of 14-10, the victory marked the fewest assists for a winning team in the past 30 seasons.

During the game, ESPN put out the four fewer previous passing attempts in a win, including three in the 1970s. And, of course, the New York Jets managed to end up on the chart, because they had managed to lose two of those games: in 1973 against the Buffalo Bills, who attempted only 5 assists, and in 1974 against the Buffalo Bills, who threw only TWO assists in that game.

Only the New York Jets could end up on the wrong side of these unique and historically gruesome football games. Luckily for the Jets (and I’m using “luckily” very, * very * loosely), they’ll avoid the distinction of becoming the very first 0-17 team in NFL history, because they sort of had three wins. this season despite having a head coach and quarterback tandem that is clearly above their heads. Just end the seasons.

Ole Miss’s Jake Springer likely won’t be overwhelmed Thursday night by the pressure that comes with playing in an Egg Bowl.

He once played in the world’s most famous college football rivalry: Army vs. Navy. As a junior outside linebacker or forward as the position is known in the Navy, Springer helped the Midshipmen secure a 31-7 victory over the Black Knights in Philadelphia, Pa., With seven tackles, one sack and 2.5. tackles for a loss.

So what does the game look like in this game?

“Surreal,” Springer said in a telephone interview. “It’s the kind of game you dream of playing as a kid. We play the game at an NFL stadium (usually in Philadelphia). It is packed with 70,000 fans. It’s crazy, all the pageantry that goes with it. You hardly even recognize it when you’re in the field. The president often attends the game.

“It’s an honor to be part of this and to play in front of so many people who have a connection with the military or who appreciate it. You learn the expectations that come with this game as soon as you arrive at the Academy.

Jake Springer (1) celebrates after bagging for the Navy during the 2019 Army-Navy game in Philadelphia. Marine won, 31-7. Springer transferred to Ole Miss and is one of the leaders in the Rebels’ enhanced defense this season. (Photo courtesy of Navy Athletics)

“But you know what? The Army has been one of the most comfortable weeks of play we’ve had. It doesn’t matter who we play every week of the season – even if the team were on a four- or five-width attack. – we always took time to work on the army attack (triple option).

“When you’re so familiar with it, it’s almost like playing soccer in your backyard with your boys.”

After watching him on the service squad after his transfer in 2020, Ole coach Miss Lane Kiffin knew Springer was special.

When asked how his defense could improve after giving up 93 points in his first two SEC games, he replied in two words: “Jake Springer”. (Springer was out after sustaining an upper-body injury in the season opener against Louisville.)

After the defense played considerably better in a 31-26 win on Oct. 16 at Tennessee, Kiffin was asked for the key to the defense’s resurgence. “Jake Springer,” he replied.

Yes, Springer came back and contributed 11 tackles, one sack and one stoppage for a loss.

Springer, 23, played a major role in the Rebels’ defensive improvement. His 44 tackles don’t really measure his impact. His teammates consider him a leader. Linebacker Montrell Custis came up with another description: “He’s a beast.”

Along with linebacker Chance Campbell and defensive end Sam Williams, he helped galvanize a unit that badly needed a guy to say ‘follow me’.

Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo isn’t surprised by Springer’s success in the SEC.

“I love this kid and I’m really happy for him and I do well in the DJ (Durkin) system there. Lane gave him a chance. I’m thankful that he landed in an obviously great place and played well, ”Niumatalolo said in a Zoom interview. “He was a phenomenal player for us and fitted in perfectly with Coach (Brian) Newberry’s (defensive coordinator) system.”

Ahead of the 2019 season, Newberry shifted Springer from safety to outside linebacker. Springer said it allows him to make more plays. He’s in the same post for the Rebels.

Photo by Joshua McCoy / Ole Miss Athletics

“I think for me that was definitely a big step and I appreciate that Coach Newberry sees the versatility in me and gives me that chance at Navy,” said Springer, who is 6ft 1in and 205lbs. “It helped me with my footballing IQ, my technique. It took me to be just a safety where I feel like just a ball player now.”

In his first year there, he led the Navy in sacks (8) and casualty tackles (16).

It’s surprising that Springer, who grew up in Kansas City, only had two FBS scholarship offers outside of high school – the Army and the Navy.

“I don’t know, maybe he wasn’t the full burner that schools are looking for,” Niumatalolo said. “But he had it all for us. He could have played on the offensive side of the ball. He has very good hands. I see he returned punters for Ole Miss (when Dontario Drummond was injured), and he did it for us too.

“And I think the one thing you can’t say about a kid before you train him every day is that he’s a very smart player. I remember once during a spring training I was calling plays. We came to the line of scrimmage and he called them. “Look at him, he’s coming here! I mean, I’m the head coach and I can’t yell at him for that, but I meant, “Do you want to shut up Springer?” “”

After his junior season, Springer decided to enter the transfer portal. He told Navy Capital Gazette writer Bill Wagner that he wanted to play in the NFL and felt he needed to participate in the SEC to show off his talent.

“We were hoping he would stay,” Niumatalolo said. “But I understand, I’ve been here for a long time. It’s not for everyone, I understand. But when we saw that he was going to leave, we tried to help him. And it was interesting to see that he had quite a few people watching him. We had duct tape. And I’m sure the coaches looked at it and was like “Whoa! They could see that he was playing well against very good teams.

This is one of the reasons he chose Navy. “They play in a big conference (American Athletic), play Notre Dame every year,” Springer said. “I learned a lot from being up there in terms of discipline, as a man. I enjoy my time up there, for sure.

He chose Ole Miss over Michigan, Missouri, Notre Dame, Texas Tech, Illinois, Iowa State and others.

“I liked the buzz and the coaching staff with Coach Kiffin and Coach Durkin and Coach (Chris) Partridge,” Springer said. “I was hearing a lot of good things about these guys from some of the connections I had through Navy.

“It’s an SEC team. It was very exciting around this program, and talking to the coaches, listening to their confidence and what they were building here, I wanted to be a part of it.

So far, he’s been part of a 9-2 Ole Miss team that is ranked No.8 nationally and vying for a New Years Six Bowl game. But the Rebels will likely have to beat Mississippi State, which has won four of its last five games and is looking to improve its own bowl chances.

State, 7-4, is favored at home among the Cowbells by two points.

Springer watched the Egg Bowl last season – a 31-24 Ole Miss victory at Oxford.

“Just like Army-Navy, I feel like the Egg Bowl is one of the top 5 rivalries in the country,” Springer said. “And being around last year’s one, seeing how the players handled this rivalry, it was nice to get a feel for it and see how much of a fun rivalry it is.

“It’s a pride game because it’s so close to home. A lot of guys growing up here, it’s Ole Miss or it’s Mississippi State. Same thing with a lot of guys who go to the Navy or one of the other military academies. Growing up, they had to choose sides. And knowing that any year the outcome of this game is like flipping a coin. That’s what makes a rivalry.

Nadia to play Texas A&M Corpus Cristi; Reina completes her first year of university in eighth grade

WEST FARGO, ND – As West Fargo volleyball saw its season come to a close in the state tournament semi-finals, two sisters, Nadia and Reina Chwailkowski helped find the Packers’ success this season by winning the EDC and were seeded number one. Their older sister, Darian plays in North Dakota and Nadia played her final season while Reina is just starting to play in college as an eighth grader.

“We’ve always been a big volleyball family. When my sister was playing, we would watch her all the time and we would always play in our garden, ”Nadia said. “To have my little sister with me, everyone asks me, ‘Oh, how’s that? I love it. I wouldn’t want anyone else to be in the last row with me.

“It’s something really special. I think a lot of athletes in other programs aren’t that lucky to have that, ”said head coach Kelsey Gibbons. “Reina may be young, but she’s been playing the game forever. Having an older sister allowed her to be in the gym a lot. The chemistry and the communication they have in the field. They trust each other. They want to play for each other. They both know what success looks like.

It’s not hard to see how much of an impact Reina has had on Nadia’s senior season. Chwialkowski hit 1,000 kills, was conference player of the year and signed her national letter of intent to play division one volleyball at Texas A&M Corpus Cristi.

“I’m just trying to figure it all out now by putting the university in the future and just focusing on the present, but our performance is helping me a lot right now,” Nadia said.

“She’s obviously a very gifted athlete, but what’s more, what makes her so special is that she’s an incredible teammate and leader,” said Gibbons. “She puts others before her and when you’re a talented person it can sometimes be overshadowed. This is what is unique about Nadia. It’s not about Nadia. It’s about his teammates.

It’s that mentality, according to head coach Kelsey Gibbons, that will make her perform even better at the next level.

I would love to choose Dravid’s brain: Rachin https://clarencehouse-hotel.co.uk/i-would-love-to-choose-dravids-brain-rachin/ Thu, 18 Nov 2021 16:37:13 +0000 https://clarencehouse-hotel.co.uk/i-would-love-to-choose-dravids-brain-rachin/ All-round young New Zealand Rachin Ravindra said on Thursday he was unsure if his name had any connection to Rahul Dravid, but he was hoping to pick the brains of India’s head coach during the ongoing T20I series. All-round young New Zealand Rachin Ravindra said on Thursday he was unsure if his name had any connection to Rahul Dravid, but he was hoping to pick the brains of India’s head coach during the ongoing T20I series.

Rachin, who celebrated his 22nd birthday on Thursday, was asked at a virtual press conference here if his name had a connection to two of India’s greatest cricketers, Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar.

“Honestly, I’m not too sure. I never really asked mum and dad where the name came from… I guess you should ask them, ”he said.

Rachin was born in Wellington to Indian parents Ravi Krishnamurthy and Deepa Krishnamurthy, both of whom moved from Bangalore in the 1990s.

Rachin made his New Zealand debut at the 2016 U-19 World Cup as well as the 2018 U-19 Cricket World Cup and during that time he first met Dravid, who was the coach. Indian juniors.

“Yes, Dravid is an absolute legend in the game and I played a bit of cricket against him when he coached in India A and a few playoffs a few years ago when he came to New Zealand.

He was coaching these guys and the Indian Under-19 team. So it’s just great to interact with them a bit. Obviously I’d love to interact a bit more during this series, but he’s an absolute legend of the game. So if I can pick his brain, that would be amazing, ”he said.

Rachin made his international debut against Bangladesh earlier in the year when they lost all five of the T20 Series 2-3 matches to Bangladesh.

He was also part of the New Zealand squad which faced India in the World Trials Championship final but failed to reach the XI in June.

In the first T20I in Jaipur, Rachin was played for seven by Mohammed Siraj.

Describing the opportunity to play India in their own backyard, he said: “All kinds of nations always want the chance to play in India and I think it has been a pretty surreal experience so far. . This T20 is very special. ” Left arm spinner Rachin also spoke about the legacy of the Indian spin and said spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was very special to him.

They have been doing this for a very long time. They are world class spinners especially Ashwin he has an amazing record and he’s been around for a long time and the variations are amazing. Personally, I have not been in contact and would love to choose his brain anytime, ” he concluded.
