You will often find Asiatic and Oriental lilies that have been forced into bloom for Easter. These would make a great alternative for an Easter lily so you can plant them in your garden. Asiatic lilies are the hardiest and easiest to grow for zone 3 gardens. Oriental lilies are hardy to zone 4 – some cultivars can survive (especially if mulched) and others cannot. I planted many Oriental Lilies in the spring and enjoyed them for a season. However, two oriental lilies have been coming back for years – Casa Blanca and Star Gazer.

Once your pot lily has finished flowering, when the ground is no longer frozen, plant it in the ground as you would any potted perennial. Just keep the pot in your garage until you can plant the plant in the ground. Plant Asiatic and Oriental lilies in full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight) in well-drained soil. Fertilize your lilies each spring with a 5-10-10 formula or slow-release fertilizer, following label directions.

I was looking through plant catalogs and was enamored with the yellow tree peony. I would like to grow a yellow tree peony if possible. Will they grow here?

Unfortunately, tree peonies are not reliably hardy in zone 3 – they are classified for zone 4. However, there is an even better alternative – the intersectional hybrid peony (Itoh). In 1948, after years and years of trying, Toichi Itoh, a Japanese botanist, was the first person to successfully cross a tree peony with a herbaceous peony. Unfortunately, he died before his hybrid flowered in 1964. Four of his plants produced high quality dark yellow double flowers. These plants, called intersectional hybrid peonies or Itoh peonies, have inherited the best traits from both parents. They produce flowers and foliage that resemble tree peonies, but have the hardiness of herbaceous peonies. They emerge later in the spring than herbaceous peonies. These hybrids have a nice upright form, are resistant to wind and heavy rain, and are very disease resistant. They produce many huge blooms once they mature and the blooms last longer than standard tree peonies.

Intersectional peonies (Itoh) used to be very difficult and expensive to get and 20 years ago you were paying between $300 and $1000 for a plant. A Canadian company began producing them in the early 2000s, which made them more affordable and accessible. You can now find them for around $100 or a little less. ‘Bartzella’ is the most popular Itoh peony, a strong semi-double yellow with a lemon scent. ‘Garden Treasure’ is a light golden yellow, semi-double with very large flowers. “Sequestered Sun” has large, bright canary yellow flowers with showy stamens.

The branch will continue to grow from the bud closest to the tip. Fewer branches means fewer apples, but apples should be thinned to one fruit every 6 to 8 inches anyway. You will get bigger and better apples rather than lots of small ones. It’s hard to choose all these cute little babies, but it really pays off in the end. Now is the time to prune your fruit trees – open the center, remove any crossed or damaged branches and any water shoots that are straight up – they never produce fruit but consume a lot of the tree’s energy . The Extension website has plenty of information and diagrams to help you figure out the right way to do the job, or call a certified arborist to plod through the snow with their ladders. Just be sure to do it now, before things heat up and disease starts spreading.

When is a good time to repot my houseplants and do you have any suggestions on how to do this? What suggests my houseplant needs repotting?

This is the perfect time to replant houseplants. If you see roots protruding from the bottom of the pot, or protruding from the top, water running through and the plant still seems dry, or the plant just looks sickly, now is the time. As daylight hours lengthen, houseplants wake up and begin to sprout new shoots. Even if you’re not repotting, now is the time to start fertilizing – just apply a little at first, half diluted.

To repot, water first, then gently slide the plant out of its current pot and watch the roots. If they are bunched up or too tight and there is little or no soil, separate them a bit and cut off any that look black, limp, or are just too long. If it now has plenty of room in the original (cleaned) pot, simply add fresh potting soil and water thoroughly, making sure the excess water drains away. Elevate your garden to new heights for easier access and greater productivity. Raised beds allow you to overcome poor soils by creating the ideal growing mix. They also make gardening more comfortable with less bending and kneeling.

Whether you buy a kit or build your own, there are a few things to consider when creating a raised bed.

If possible, place the garden in a sunny location. Most plants need at least six hours of sunlight, and vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, and melons perform best with a full day of sunlight.

Choose a durable material such as interlocking blocks, fieldstone, plastic lumber, or naturally durable wood like cedar. The material chosen will influence the shape and size of your garden. Some materials allow for curved beds while others are limited to squares, rectangles, and other angular shapes.

Design your raised bed according to your space and your needs. A width of three or four feet makes it easy to reach all parts of the garden for planting, weeding and harvesting. Raising your planting bed at least eight to 12 inches improves drainage and provides ample space for most plants to root and grow. If you want to minimize flex, go higher. Add benches to increase your comfort and ease of gardening.

Roughen or loosen the surface of the existing soil if your bed is built on compact, slow-draining soil. This will allow water to easily move from the raised bed into the ground below. Cover the bottom of the bed with newspaper or cardboard, if necessary, to smother existing weeds and grass.

Line the bottom of your raised bed with hardware cloth to reduce the risk of animals burrowing into your garden. Lay the hardware fabric on the floor and fold it along the inside of the raised bed walls.

Fill the bed with a quality potting soil that is well-drained but also able to retain moisture and nutrients. This can be a mix of topsoil and quality compost, a high-quality potting soil, or a planting mix designed specifically for raised beds.

Grow all the plants you would normally grow in the ground. Just make sure the plants are suited to the growing conditions – sun, heat and wind – in your area. Since soil mixing and drainage is ideal in a raised bed, you will be able to grow more plants per square foot. Just be sure to leave enough space for the plants to reach their adult size.

Keep your plants healthy and productive with proper watering. This is essential for growing any garden, but even more crucial in a fast-draining raised bed. Simply raising the height of the garden increases drainage, and a raised bed filled with planting mix means more frequent watering. Consider using drip irrigation or soaker hoses to make watering easier. Always water thoroughly when the top centimeter of soil is dry.

Add mulch to help reduce watering and the need for other garden maintenance. Spread a layer of evergreen needles, pine straw, shredded leaves or other organic material on the surface of the soil. This helps retain moisture, suppresses weeds, and adds nutrients and organic matter to the soil as it breaks down. You’ll spend less time watering and weeding throughout the season.

Add an organic fertilizer to the planting if your planting mix does not already contain it. Reapply mid-season if plants need a nutrient boost. Always follow the instructions on the fertilizer container label.

Hybrid tea roses are one of the easiest plants to grow in the Imperial Valley. They are hardy enough to withstand our hot summers and they enjoy our cool winters. Roses have one of the most beautiful flowers in the world and their fragrance is delicious.

January and February, when roses are dormant, is the best time to prune them and prepare them for spring bloom.

Why prune roses? You can leave your roses alone, they will reach 5 to 6 feet tall and produce fewer and fewer flowers each year. If you prune your roses every year, removing half or two-thirds of their height, you encourage the growth of new canes and more flowers in the spring. With pruning, the flowers are also larger and have stronger stems.

Cutting dead canes improves air circulation in the rose to reduce mildew, black spot and other fungal diseases caused by too much moisture. And, of course, pruning maintains the correct shape of the rose.

To get started, you need the proper tools. Buy a pair of high-quality hand pruners, a set of long-handled loppers, and leather gloves. Pruners with curved blades are preferred over those with flat blades. Your pruners should be disinfected with each different rosebush size with a little bleach to limit the spread of disease from one rosebush to another.

Sharpen your pruners before each pruning season to limit the spread of disease and ensure clean, clean cuts. If the pruners are dull, they will tear the stems and allow disease to enter the plant.

When pruning a cane, look for a bud ready to form a new cane that faces the outside of the plant. Cut the cane 0.5 inch above this bud and at a 45 degree angle. You can also prune above a five-leaf leaf.

To prune a shrub rose, which repeats blooms on mature canes, prune all canes by one-third and remove one-third of old canes each year. Climbing roses are also repeat bloomers and are only pruned to maintain correct size and shape.

After pruning is complete, sprinkle a rose-based systemic fertilizer around the base of the plant and dig it into the soil. Water to get the fertilizer down to the roots of the plant. A systemic fertilizer contains ingredients that kill aphids and other unwanted insects. Fertilize monthly from February to April and from September to November.

If a rose has leaves that look like powder, it probably has powdery mildew – a fungal disease. Mix 1 teaspoon of baking soda, ½ teaspoon of cooking oil and 1 liter of warm water. Pour into a spray bottle and spray the infected leaves. Commercial sulfur dusts also control powdery mildew.

Some popular hybrid roses to add to your rose garden include Chrysler Imperial and Mr. Lincoln (red), Tropicana and Brandy (orange), Perfume Delight and First Prize (pink), and Oregold and Midas Touch (yellow).

A new YA animated fantasy series titled Supernatural Academy was commissioned from the series by Peacock and the series’ main cast has been revealed.

Peacock has ordered a full season of Supernatural Academy, based on Jaymin Eve’s bestselling book series of the same name. The series will be produced by 41 Entertainment and follows twin sisters Jessa and Mischa, who may be twins but their lives have taken very different directions. The biggest difference between them? One sister has been raised in the supernatural world her entire life, while the other has only recently learned that she exists! And now, will the two meet at Supernatural Academy? It will make an interesting storytelling. The series is currently scheduled to premiere on January 20, 2022 on Peacock with 16 episodes of 30 minutes.

“It’s so amazing to see my original story come to life in this high quality animation project” noted The Supernatural Academy author Jaymin Eve. “I am very grateful to Peacock and 41 Entertainment for believing in me and I’m sure all fans of the books are eagerly tagging January 20 in their diaries.”

Along with this news comes the announcement of the main cast of the series, including brief summaries of their respective characters.

LARISSA DIAS (Supernatural, Falling sky, Punch When the heart calls you) as “Jessa Lebron”. Jessa is a popular Wolf Shifter in her freshman year at Supernatural Academy. She has everything a daughter could ask for, including a supportive dad and four best friends with their own unique supernatural skills.

GIGI SAUL GUERRO (Marvel Superhero Adventures, In the dark: CULTURAL SHOCK, Super Monsters, Nina’s world) as “Mischa Jackson / Lebron”. Raised by a single mother with a tendency to move from place to place, Mischa never fitted in anywhere. The shy, creative and sweet girl transforms after realizing that her mother has been hiding who she really is for sixteen years.

VINCENT CLAMP (Ninjago, Ice Age: The Adventures of Buck Wild, The dragon prince) as “Maximus”. Max is a natural leader, as evidenced by his watchful eye on his younger brother Braxton.

CARDI WONG (Are you scared of the dark?, Super girl) like “Braxton”. Brax is the amiable, awkward, and gentle talker of the group.

SHANNON CHAN KENT (You, I woke up, Good problem, Perpetuity) as “Elda Kristov”. Elda is the daughter of the director of Supernatural Academy and considers Jessa her main rival for queen bee status.

BETHANY BROWN (Charm, The 100) as “Terra”. Terra has always been Jessa’s best friend. Terra’s unique witchcraft power perfectly complements the group’s supernatural abilities.

BRIAN DRUMMOND (Mega Man: fully charged, The Willoughbys) as “Director Kristov”. Kristov shows himself to be manipulative, mean and arrogant as he plots against the Lebron twins from the moment they are reunited.

BARBARA KOTTMEIER (Supernatural, Pattern, Fall in love with Vermont) as “Lienda Jackson / Lebron”. Lienda is the true definition of a mother. She is a strong woman who sacrificed her supernatural ability and a life with one of her twin daughters, only to protect her family.

ALESSANDRO JULIANI (Battlestar Galactica, the magicians, Girlfriend’s Guide to Divorce, The 100) as “Jonathon Lebron”. As the leader of the World Council and the Alpha Wolf of Lebron’s pack, Jonathon not only has a civic duty but also a fatherly instinct to save the Kingdoms and his daughters.

ALI J EISNER (Fragile rock, The great courtyard of Gisèle) as “Jae”. A fairy whose music has the literal charm of appeasing wild beasts and creating new life.

DIANA KAARINA (The hollow, Barbie, My little Pony, strawberry shortbread pie) like “Santra”. As the new history teacher at Supernatural Academy, Santra is the smart, compassionate and confident guide students can count on.

KATHLEEN BARRE (Sabrina: Secrets of a Teenage Witch, My friendship with my little pony is magic, Johnny test) like “Yufon”. Yufon is a powerful and stern member of the World Council.
