It’s that time of year when a favorite summertime treat becomes the center of attention. The refreshing and savory taste of watermelon will be celebrated Saturday at the Enterprise Farmers Market.

The annual Watermelon Day will feature the traditional celebratory contests – the wildly popular Seed Spitting Contest, the Adventurous Watermelon Rolling Contest and the exciting and fun Watermelon Eating Contest.

“Practice your seed spitting skills, get in the competitive spirit, smile and come join us for a good time Saturday morning,” Mayor William E. Cooper said.

The mayor also invited farmers or home gardeners who have grown a big watermelon to come early and participate in the biggest watermelon competition, which will be held immediately after welcoming vendors and visitors to the market.

Kay Kirkland, Special Projects Coordinator, said this year’s sponsor, First South Farm Credit, helped hand out great prizes throughout the day at all competitions.

Registration for all contests will begin at 8 a.m. The biggest watermelon contest will be around 8:15 a.m. 10:30 a.m.

“If you’ve never entered or watched these contests, they’re so much fun!” said Kirkland. “We would love for you to come and put your skills to the test!”

Games are only part of the day’s adventure, she said.

‘You’ll want to browse under the pavilion to see what excellent fresh produce and fruit are available this week. As the growing season progresses, new items often appear,” she said. “And of course, the talented craft vendors always promise surprises.”

At 11.30 a.m., a new animation is offered inside the market conference room. Viva La Cookie’s Teresa Young will be giving a watermelon-themed cookie decorating class. Registration for this class for a nominal fee will also begin at 8 a.m.

Vendors will open at the market at 7 a.m. Other activities will begin at 8:30 a.m.
