You have made the decision you want to make on a construction project. Whether or not this is your next home or a detached garage addition to your existing property, knowing how to study floor plans to determine if the design is right for you is an important tool to have.

“Whether you’re looking to work with a professional designer to create a custom design or stroll through open houses, you need to assess each room and how the home layout fits together. What you see may not be the ideal way to present the floor plan. The key is to integrate your lifestyle and the way you and your family use a space to make sure it’s right for you. – Rick McAlexander, CEO of Associated Designs.

While it might seem intimidating, Associated Designs has put together four tips and tricks that will let you look at floor plans like a professional designer.

Movement

A house design should allow easy flow. What does it mean? The flow of a floor plan is all about movement. Is there a reason a wall is where it is? Are there dead ends? The way the parts evolve and are connected is the key to a good fit.

“Measuring the natural flow of a design can be as simple as counting the number of steps between the kitchen and the dining room,” says McAlexander. “For example, if the dining room is far enough away from the kitchen, there is a problem with the floor plan. How you move from room to room and how you move around a room is important.

As a floor plan for your study, try to consider moving around the different rooms. Also consider how you live in your current home. What elements do you like? If you like your bedroom to be away from the hustle and bustle of the living room, make sure the design you’re looking at has a similar layout. What things would you change that are just as important as what you love about your current home? If you don’t like having your laundry room between the kitchen and the garage, make sure the floor plan you’re considering has it located near the bedrooms.

Live outside

Outdoor space is an often overlooked design feature. Over the past year or so, we’ve seen an increase in the desire to live outdoors, proving that living space isn’t just limited to the living room. Think about how you entertain, spread out, and allow guests to mingle in the living room, dining room, kitchen, or backyard? If outdoor entertainment is in the mix, make sure your patio or porch is built with this feature in mind.

“Make sure you factor in the outdoor living or entertainment space you’ll need,” McAlexander said. A recurring tip to keep in mind regardless of the space you consider is: if there’s something you like about the outdoor space of your current home, make sure your new home has the same qualities. . You want to have an exterior that is just as comfortable as the interior.

For example, if the beautiful farmhouse you are looking at offers a thin covered porch in the front and a large covered porch in the back with an outdoor kitchen. If you like to grill and cook meals while enjoying the outdoors and can imagine sunny summer dinners with friends and family here, this feature is a good choice. If you enjoy a hot drink on the porch while watching the sunrise or greeting your neighbors on a walk, you may find that the thin covered space is not big enough for your favorite chair or swing. . A simple change to the floor plan may be necessary to make the covered porch a more usable space.

Natural light

Just as important as the size of the kitchen is how much natural light will shine in it. A home design that doesn’t provide enough light can appear dark and dreary. Every room should have a window because natural light has a big impact on the ambiance of your home.

“When you consider floor plans, you want to make sure you consider where the sun will be. A design might appear to be filled with windows, but if the orientation of your home or land isn’t taken into account, you might not get the full effect of those windows, ”says McAlexander.

Natural light is a simple yet powerful influence when it comes to long term happiness in your home. Too little light and your modern meadow home will feel like a cave, so don’t forget to pay special attention to the windows.
