Esther MacWhinnie Slattery
LITCHFIELD – Esther MacWhinnie Slattery, 85, of Litchfield passed away comfortably on October 27, 2021, at home surrounded by her loving family. Esther was born April 26, 1936 in Gardiner to Charles Doyle and Ruby (Hinkley) MacWhinnie. She graduated from Litchfield Academy in 1953 as a valedictorian. On September 3, 1954, Esther married Roscoe Daniel Slattery, son of Edward David and Winnifred (Maxwell) Slattery of Wales. They made their home and raised their family in Litchfield. She leaves behind her three sons, Brian R. Slattery of Barrington, NH, Kevin C. Slattery and his wife Holly of Rochester, NH, and Shawn E. Slattery and his wife Paula of Vieques, Puerto Rico; seven grandchildren, Jason Slattery and his wife Elishia of Milton, NH, Justin Slattery and his fiancee Cara McLaughlin of Boston, Kasey Cook and her husband Graham of Brentwood, NH, Jarrod Wheeler of Wakefield, NH, Brendan Slattery and his wife Marissa of Missoula, Mont, Connor Slattery of San Diego, Calif., and Jaime Evans of Northwood, NH; one brother, Roger MacWhinnie and his wife Betty of Litchfield; several nieces, nephews, cousins; and seven great-grandchildren (Ricky, Riley, Tanner, Alice, Kennedy, Parker and Cohan). She was predeceased by her parents; husband; brothers David, Russell and Charles Jr.; and her sister Charlene MacWhinnie Gousse Esther was first and foremost a housewife, devoting her time to raising her three sons and supporting their athletic, extracurricular and community activities. She was extremely proud of her three sons. She was also very proud to take care of Rex and Ann Eaton’s children (Nathan, Kristin and Matt) during their formative years. Esther has volunteered at the Litchfield Farmers Club, Sportsmen’s Club, Snowmobile Club, Historical Society, Food Bank, Academy Community Building, High School Athletic Booster Clubs and in the municipal office as an Election Clerk. She enjoyed cooking, genealogy, dancing, socializing, camping, snowmobiling, puns and community service. She was an inspiration to everyone and her family values ​​and bright smile were endearing qualities. She was happiest when she was surrounded by her family and dear friends, especially when she nurtured them and their souls. Her loving memories will remain etched in their hearts forever. A funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Sunday November 7 at Litchfield Plains Cemetery with a “Celebration of Life†to follow at Masonic Hall, 2422 Hallowell Road.
