The South Laguna Community Garden Park currently has openings for gardeners interested in growing their own raised beds.

Created from a vacant lot in 2009, the Garden Park is today a lively and productive set of 53 raised beds (6 ‘x 8’) maintained by individual families or shared with friends. Over the years, more than 400 people have become members of Laguna’s only community garden, and countless residents and visitors enjoy the space of the public park every day.

Green vegetables such as kale, chard, lettuce, herbs and root vegetables thrive in the region’s temperate climate, and many gardeners love to share their bountiful harvest with their neighbors. This past year, gardeners have embarked on the difficult process of removing the invasive nightshade from the surrounding slopes and replacing it with native California drought tolerant plants.

Members of the garden also look after the public spaces of the park by pruning, weeding and planting as needed. Some volunteers come only to help maintain the entire garden.

Although it was closed to non-members for a short time at the start of the pandemic, the Garden Park allowed neighbors and visitors to meet safely and offered much-needed “green therapy”. Over the next few months, the Garden Park will once again offer potlucks with the famous Garden Band, songs and gardening lessons to its community.
